About
Flax art & design
For more than 60 years we have enjoyed serving artists and furthering
the creative processes in the San Francisco Bay Area. We are a family
business headed by Philip Flax, the youngest son of founders Herman
and Sylvia Flax. Philip's three children fill vital roles in the company
and represent the third generation. With the support of our retail
store and its loyal customers, the growth of our mail order catalog,
and the dedication of all our employees, we bring you the flaxart.com
on-line store.
Herman and Sylvia Flax, with their son Jerome, established Flax Artist's
Materials in downtown San Francisco in 1938. Having lost virtually
everything in the Great Depression, Herman took his family west from
New Jersey and opened a tiny art supply store. Herman's three brothers
also established independent, successful art supply outlets in New
York, Los Angeles and Chicago, and eventually spread to Phoenix, Orlando
and Atlanta. In 1952 Herman passed away at an early age, and upon
returning from military service Philip was thrust into the business
alongside his brother Jerry. The Flax brothers grew close to their
customers, becoming well known for their generous support of struggling
artists and the local arts.
The San Francisco retail store soon drew wide attention for its incredible
breadth of product (over 45,000 items), its courteous and knowledgeable
staff, and its ability to inspire creativity by thoughtful presentation.
Having outgrown the confines of downtown S.F., in 1981 Flax moved
to 1699 Market Street. The warehouse behind the new retail store afforded
enough space to venture into the mail-order catalog business. Then
in 1985, the catalog a success, Flax Artist's Materials became Flax
art & design, a different name to reflect the broader and more diverse
offerings, and moved the distribution and customer service centers
ten miles south to Brisbane for more even more room.
Today, our Market Street store enters its twentieth year and our Brisbane
warehouse and offices stretch a city block. We believe our Web sites
capture those elements that have made us popular; sensible design
and a unique product assortment, backed by service you can count on.
As one pleased customer stated, we are a "candy store for the creative." |
